Civil Society: The Power of Activity and Engagement

A panel dedicated to the role of civil society highlighted the critical importance of active citizen involvement in shaping the present and future of the country. Panelists discussed the significance of social engagement and mechanisms for civic participation.

Experts agreed that civil society plays a pivotal role in building a democratic state. They emphasized that civic activity encompasses not only non-governmental organizations and social movements but also individual engagement—ranging from participation in public consultations to initiatives such as citizen-proposed resolutions. Participants stressed that consistent use of tools like petitions, participatory budgets, and legislative initiatives is key to effectiveness.

During the discussion, the fundamental role of civic education was underscored in preparing citizens—especially young people—for active participation in public life. It was also noted that many current and future local government officials need preparation to genuinely listen to the voices of residents.

Panelists highlighted the challenge of engaging the younger generation in social and civic life. They discussed strategies to effectively encourage young people to act, such as leveraging social media, organizing workshops, and creating spaces for open dialogue.

The panel emphasized the importance of tools that enable citizens to influence policy and social development effectively. Mechanisms such as citizen-proposed resolutions and monitoring local government actions were described not only as citizen rights but also as responsibilities in their watchdog role. The discussion highlighted that growing civic awareness leads to increased expectations of authorities but also to a greater sense of accountability for individual actions. Participants agreed that civil society is a force that can effectively hold those in power accountable, fostering transparency in public life.
